Remember the Mountain Safety Rules

Even experienced hikers and skiers know how quickly conditions can change in the mountains. These guidelines help you make safe and informed decisions on your trip:

  1. Plan your route and let someone know where you are going.
  2. Adjust your trip according to your skill level and the conditions.
  3. Check weather and avalanche forecasts.
  4. Be prepared for storms and cold weather, even on short trips.
  5. Bring the equipment you need to help yourself and others.
  6. Choose safe routes. Recognize avalanche terrain and unsafe ice.
  7. Use a map and compass. Always know where you are.
  8. Turn back in time – it is no shame to do so.
  9. Conserve your energy and seek shelter if necessary.
