Setesdal is a Certified Sustainable Destination
Setesdal has been awarded the Sustainable Destination label – proof that we work long-term and with clear goals to care for nature, the local community, and the visitors who come here. We aim to offer meaningful experiences with minimal environmental impact – in a vibrant valley where people and mountains meet authentically.

Since 2016, Visit Setesdal has worked to qualify Setesdal for the Travel Sustainable Badge.

The goal has been to pursue the cooperation within product and attraction development, with sustainability as a common platform.

We care for the mountains, waterways, and the habitats of the wild reindeer. Sustainable choices in nature have wide-reaching impacts – now and for the future.

Nature and climate – We protect the wild reindeer and safeguard our mountains and rivers.

The Sustainable Destination Label
Setesdal is part of Norway’s national network of Sustainable Destinations, coordinated by Næringshagen in Ryfylke. With the Sustainable Destination label, Setesdal is recognized as a responsible and holistic region – both nationally and in international markets where awareness of environmental and sustainability issues is high.

The certification is granted for three years at a time, and Setesdal was recertified in spring 2023. The next recertification will take place in winter 2026. Several local businesses are also pursuing their own certifications, such as Eco-Lighthouse (Miljøfyrtårn), to contribute to the region’s sustainable development.
