Experience Flekkefjord in two days

Welcome to Flekkefjord, a southern Norwegian gem where coast, islands and history meet. This itinerary gives you suggestions for two eventful days filled with experiences that are perfect for anyone wanting to explore something new and create lasting memories.

Day 1:

The first day in Flekkefjord begins with a walk through Hollenderbyen, where history and street art set the tone. The day continues with experiences that combine culture and activity, before ending with a pleasant overnight stay in the heart of the town.

Accommodation in the town centre

Start the day with a good breakfast and a pleasant atmosphere at the hotel. At Grand Hotell Flekkefjord, you stay right in the centre, surrounded by charming wooden houses and only a short walk from Hollenderbyen. If you prefer modern comfort and views of the water, Maritim Fjordhotel is a great alternative. Both hotels offer a cosy start to the day and are the perfect base for exploring the town.

Hollenderbyen

Continue your walk to Hollenderbyen, a neighbourhood easily recognised by its white wooden houses and narrow streets. Here you’ll find colourful street art on the walls, and along the streets, signs share fascinating glimpses into the area’s history. It’s a place to take your time, to snap photos and learn more about the past or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

Flekkefjord Museum

No visit to Flekkefjord is complete without a stop at Flekkefjord Museum, located in the oldest house in Hollenderbyen. The local history exhibition offers insight into daily life, trade and society from the 18th century to the present day, with a special focus on the past 200 years. The museum provides a close encounter with the town’s cultural heritage and is a natural stop along your walk through Hollenderbyen.

Street art walk

End the day with a stroll among the street art that adds colour to Flekkefjord. The town’s walls are covered with everything from large murals to small details that appear where you least expect them. See the Google Maps trail of the cultural path in Hollenderbyen and explore the art at your own pace. The street art has become an important part of the town’s identity and offers a memorable way to end the day.

Day 2:

On your second day in Flekkefjord, you can choose how to spend your time. Head out to Hidra and experience island life up close, or stay on the mainland and try rail biking along the old Flekkefjord Line. Both options offer a great way to round off your stay.

Hidra

Hidra is known for its beautiful coastal landscape and rich history. A hike up to Hågåsen offers great views and fascinating encounters with war memorials from World War II. At the Fedrenes Minne Museum, you can learn more about the island’s culture and traditions. The island also offers lovely spots for a swim, either along the coast or in freshwater. For those looking for more activity, kayaking, fishing and diving provide experiences a little out of the ordinary.

Active day on the mainland

If you prefer to stay on the mainland, rail biking on the Flekkefjordbanen is a great choice. The 17-kilometre route takes you through nature, dark tunnels and historic surroundings.

There are also good opportunities to explore the area by bike or go for a hike nearby, with trails offering both scenic views and beautiful nature experiences.
