THE CULTURAL HEART OF NORWAY

SETESDAL

Cultural experiences in the mountains of the Setesdal valley

The folk music of Setesdal, a living world heritage, was added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2019. This is a unique oral tradition that has been passed down through generations, possibly dating back to the Middle Ages.

At the heart of this tradition are the powerful sounds of the Hardanger fiddle and the jaw harp, the energetic gangar dance, and stev, short poetic folk songs often performed in a playful dialogue known as stevjing. Together, these traditions form a vibrant cultural expression that remains an important part of everyday life and celebrations throughout the valley.
