The southern archipelago, which you can find outside Mandal, is worth experiencing. A fishing trip with the family or a romantic boat trip between islands and rocky shores at sunset is a memory of true southern idyll.

Mandal is located at the mouth of the Mandal River and has a rich history with salmon and timber. Parts of the town still bear the marks of historical times with beautiful, old, white Southern Norwegian houses along narrow cobblestone streets.

The cultural center Buen gives Mandal a modern expression, which is reflected in everything the cultural center has to offer for both young and old.

In the center, Mandal Museum and Vigeland house are located, which each year have exhibitions showcasing famous works by, among others, the Mandal native Gustav Vigeland, Adolph Tidemand, and Amaldus Nielsen.

It is well noticed during the summer, that Mandal is a concert city, and when many of the concerts take place outdoors, the city fills up with music and happy faces.

The Wednesday concerts have gained a reputation that extends far beyond the city limits, attracting both young and old to a atmospheric concert at Giert Karis square every Wednesday throughout the summer.

As a cultural city, it naturally comes with some festivals. The summer starts with MandalJazz, which jazzes up the city center.

When talking about festivals, we must of course mention Skalldyrfestivalen (the Shellfish festival), which attracts seafood enthusiasts from near and far to enjoy delicious food and music.

Skalldyrfestivalen has become a family festival with cooking classes for children several times during the festival.

With a shellfish festival, of course, comes a world championship in shrimp peeling. Do you dare to compete against former champions?
