LINDESNES:

A SUSTAINABLE DESTINATION

Being designated as a sustainable destination means that the entire destination is united in taking care of nature, culture, and the environment, strengthening social values, and ensuring economic viability for local businesses.

At the southernmost tip of the region lies Lindesnes Lighthouse, which can boast titles such as the country's first lighthouse station, southernmost mainland lighthouse, southernmost mainland point, and one of the most visited attractions in Southern Norway.

The place tells the story of coastal culture, both past and present, and with its own bakery featuring a stone oven, they can produce their own sustainable lighthouse bread, which can be purchased along with other local goods.

Lighthouse Bread at Lindesnes Lighthouse

Using local suppliers for food, products, and services is an important principle at a sustainable destination. This is something we proudly adhere to in Lindesnes. Every year, Smak & Sans is organized at Lindesnes Lighthouse, restaurants utilize local ingredients, and the Shellfish Festival held annually in Mandal places a strong emphasis on local seafood.

As a sustainable destination, we aim to become a year-round destination actively working on new offerings and accommodations for both the local population and guests.

Lindesnes is considered a paradise for fishermen, whether they are interested in sea fishing or salmon fishing, or for those who want to enjoy the tranquility of fishing in lakes. Mandal River is one of Norway's best salmon rivers, and if we go back to the 1800s and 1900s, salmon was one of the most important exports from this region. Today, between 6 and 12 tons of salmon and trout are caught each year. Landowners are also allowed to set salmon nets every summer to uphold traditions.

Lindesnes - et bærekraftig reisemål

With the 'Sustainable Destination' label, Lindesnes aims to establish credibility in international markets with a high awareness of environmental issues and sustainability. The label is awarded for three years at a time. Lindesnes was recertified in 2021 and is scheduled for recertification again in the spring of 2024.

About the Sustainability Label

A sustainable destination contributes to preserving our historical and cultural heritage and supports local communities, traditions, nature, and the environment. Local food harvested, produced, and prepared in the vicinity is also part of a sustainable destination.

However, the label does not imply that a destination is 100 percent sustainable in all areas but rather that they are in a long-term process. The destinations are evaluated every three years by Innovation Norway, which is responsible for the certification.
