Explore coastal towns, cultural highlights and the scenic landscapes of Southern Norway, all within short distances
Southern Norway is one of the easiest places in Norway to explore in just a few days. Along the coast, small towns, cultural experiences and nature are never far apart. This 3-day route gives you a balanced mix, without long travel days.
DAY 1: KRISTIANSAND
CULTURE BY THE COAST
Start in Kristiansand, a compact coastal city where culture and everyday life blend naturally. Visit the museum that was awarded "the world's most beautiful museum": Kunstsilo, one of Northern Europe’s most distinctive art museums, set in a former grain silo by the waterfront.
From here, everything is within walking distance.
Take a walk along the harbour, explore small galleries, or simply sit down at a café and ease into the slower pace of Southern Norway.
Fiskebrygga is a must, where you will see locals gather at lunchtime to buy a "fiskekake" (fish cake) from Reinhartsen, or in the evenings to socialise. This is Kristiansand’s foodie hub.
In the afternoon, head out towards the coast. Visit the city beach to take in the views, or take a stroll out to Odderøya to see the cultural scene of Kristiansand in full bloom, alongside stunning nature walks.
DAY 2: SMALL TOWNS & COASTAL LIFE
Drive (or take the bus) east along the coastline to Lillesand and Grimstad; two very characteristic small towns in the region of Southern Norway.
Here, you’ll find white wooden houses, narrow streets, local shops and cafés. There’s no need to rush, this part of the journey is about slowing down, walking around, and taking in the atmosphere.
When in Grimstad, visit the Ibsen Museum, the former home and workplace of Henrik Ibsen. This is where one of the world’s most famous playwrights began his career, adding an international cultural layer to your trip.
The rest of the day is best spent slowly, walking through town, stopping at a café, or taking short detours to beaches and viewpoints along the coast. There are also fantastic restaurants here to end the day with a great meal.
DAY 3: THE SOUTH CAPE
Head west towards the Lista area, known for its wide open landscapes, long sandy beaches and changing light, perfect for walks, or rent an electric bike to see even more.
Stop by Lista Lighthouse and explore the surrounding coastline. This is one of the best places in Southern Norway for birdwatching, especially during spring and autumn migration. Even without binoculars, the area feels very different, more open, more exposed, and shaped by wind and sea.
Continue to Lindesnes Lighthouse, the southernmost point of mainland Norway. Here, the landscape becomes more rugged, with cliffs, waves and views towards the open ocean. Visit the museum to learn more about the maritime history of the region.
End your journey with a walk along the coastal paths, where nature, history and the elements meet. A fitting end to a route that combines culture, small towns and the coastline. On the route back to Kristiansand there are many local artists with open galleries, perfect for a stop or two.
